February 23, 2025 | Pre-War Film Screening at Fuchu City Kyodo-no-Mori Museum

During the lively Plum Blossom Festival in February, we hosted our second home movie screening at the Kyodo-no-Mori Museum.

The highlight of this event was the screening of digitized 16mm film footage, originally preserved by Shimada Pharmacy in Fuchu City, made possible through the generous cooperation of the Fuchu City Culture and Sports Department (Furusato Cultural Properties Division).

The venue was the Old Tanaka Residence, which stands right across from where the original Shimada Pharmacy building once was. Although the residence was relocated here, the screening took place in the exact historical setting where the films were originally shot.

The Shimada Collection captured scenes along the Old Koshu Kaido Avenue from 1928 to 1937 (Showa 3–12). The streetscapes of old Fuchu were breathtakingly beautiful, with people in traditional kimono coming and going, creating a scene that felt as though the atmosphere of the Edo period had directly carried over into the Showa era.

Blessed with great weather, we welcomed a total of 104 attendees. Mr. Shimada himself joined us for the event, sharing precious insights and historical stories with the audience.

We also screened footage from the 1960s (Showa 30s) taken in front of the former Asahi Mutual Life Insurance sales office—a building that once stood directly opposite Shimada Pharmacy. Additionally, we showed films capturing the surrounding Honjuku-cho area. Attendees were amazed to see how parts of the neighborhood, where farmland still stretches today, have retained much of their original charm over the decades.

As a new interactive initiative, we introduced the "Memory Map Created by Everyone" activity. We displayed a historical map of Fuchu from 1964 (Showa 39) and invited visitors to stick Post-it notes with their own personal memories onto the corresponding locations.

From pre-war to post-war, it was quite literally a "time travel back to Showa-era Fuchu."
